I'm a software-oriented guy myself, so to the hardware people this question may sound silly or downright offensive, but here goes: if I'm recording for example vocals, what use do I have for a fancy microphone preamp?
The studio has, for example, an Avalon Preamp – a new one would cost something like €3000. I'm trying to find out how it would improve the sound of for example the Brauner VM1 microphone, which I can also just plug directly into my desk. I'm googling around, trying to find what the preamp could do for me, and all I see is compressor, EQ, things like that. For me, Maximus and PEQ2 are more familiar, user-friendly and flexible. Is there something the hardware preamp can do better than my FL Studio setup? If I used it, what would improve and how?
Note that I'm not asking if the preamp is worth the huge cost. It's already there. I'm asking if using it would be benefical to me in some way.
